Long-Term Stewardship Study Development Process
The National Long-Term Stewardship Study was developed by DOE in cooperation with the general public, other Federal agencies, Native American tribes, state and local governments, and all other interested parties. The process for the development of the Study is described in the Notice of Intent to prepare a National Study on Long-Term Stewardship Activities and Issues
. A summary of this process is provided below: - DOE offered a scoping period through January 4, 2000, to solicit public input about the topics and issues that should be included in the final study. All relevant comments and suggestions in developing the scope of the study were considered.
- As part of the scoping period, DOE conducted a public scoping workshop on October 28, 1999, in Oak Ridge, TN. This meeting provided an opportunity for DOE staff to discuss the objectives of the study and the study process, to describe how public input will be incorporated into the study, and to address questions.
- DOE sponsored additional public meetings to involve the public in this scoping process.
- DOE published a Notice of Intent (see above) in the Federal Register on October 6, 1999 (64 FR 54279).
- DOE published an October 1999, report to support the scoping process for development of the national study, From Cleanup to Stewardship: a Companion Report to Accelerating Cleanup: Paths to Closure and Background Information to Support the Scoping Process. The published report is available through the Center for Environmental Management Information (1-800-7EM-DATA) and the site descriptions used as the basis for the analysis presented in From Cleanup to Stewardship.
- Using the results of the public scoping process, DOE developed the draft Long-Term Stewardship Study.
- DOE conducted a public comment period through December 15, 2000, to allow comprehensive public review of the draft study.
- DOE has prepared the final Long-Term Stewardship Study for release to the public.
